I have hated the "one time" since I was 12 and was beaten outside of my middle school dance.

I quote: "you think you're a tough guy?" I said: no when you have me cuffed with a gun and a stick to hit me with." His response: he uncuffs me then pushes my skull into a block wall, then hits me with the flashlight.

I was 12! If I saw that *** today, I'd break his fat *** in half.

So, **** em.

As a group I think very highly of the police forces in the USA. Obviously, there have been many examples of troublesome behavior and outright 'thuggery' on the part of police officers. I do know several local and state police officers both here in NJ where I now live and in Colorado where I grew up. All of them both men and women are outstanding people and I'm glad they and people like them are prepared to help protect and to 'serve' my family's needs for law enforcement. One troubling change I've seen is the over-use of the 'TASER' as many police are beginning to treat it as a tool instead of the weapon it truly is.

They are good to have at the scene when the person that got stabbed is dying..... and when we are working to save them, the person who stabbed them... jumps out from behind a bush and attacks us. (had that happen)

However, some can be idiots. Like all professions you have good and bad people. Being a cop is not easy..it is stressful, plus you never call them to have a party, you call them if the s%* it hits the fan

I believe you can't judge them as a group. There are good officers and bad officers, just like in any other profession.

Since my uncle was a cop, I can say that, regardless of what we may think, there is a lot that goes on that we will NEVER know about. He has had to climb on top of skyscrapers to get people down who threaten to jump, he has had to put his life on the line to save innocent people knowing that if anything went wrong he would leave his family behind, he has had to face violent psychos who would willingly kill for drugs, he has seen things that would give any normal person a lifetime of nightmares. Not to mention, after the 9-11 plane crashes, he was in the city EVERY DAY volunteering his time, even though he was retired by that time.

Not to say all cops are like my uncle. I'm sure there are plenty of jerk cops who try to avoid really dangerous situations and get kicks out of giving people speeding tickets for going 5 mph over the speed limit.

i don't think too highly of the police in my town these days. when off duty officers who have been drinking shoot unarmed citizens and none of them are charged with anything and can keep their jobs, that makes me lose respect for law enforcement.

i think very highly of the police as a concept, and less highly of those i have seen abusing their power. and the "thin blue line" plates that let them break traffic laws with impunity are bullshit.

I have been lucky, on the few occassions I have needed the police they have been there. Having said that, they've also been there when I haven't needed them - Once they made me turn the music down an my party, another time when I was young and foolish and my friends and I set a little fire - in a place no problems would happen - boy, did we feel told off!!!!

I like them, they are normal people with normal personal issues, attempting to do an outstanding job.

We had police come and talk at our school. They have a very difficult and dangerous job that they get a lot of crap for. Of course there are annoying ones out there but in general I really appreciate what they do for society.

Some of the answers are people saying they hate cops because of a bad experience they've had. You can't judge an entire group on a few people.

I don't think highly or lowly of police. I think they are just people doing their jobs and trying to help fellow citizens.

I am neutral on this one too.
Male Cops - 50/50
Female Cops - HELL NO

The vast majority of female cops are butches and are out to get other women (mainly traffic), and they are completely useless without a gun the majority of the time, considering the strongest female police officer could get stomped by the average male.

Male Cops can be really nice, helpful and nice on the eyes, while others are power tripping nerds who honestly are just in the career so they can get some "respect". Then you got the OLD creepers and the OLD fatherly type cops.

So no don't judge the whole "Cop Group" as a whole! Hate the females, along with the ugly and/or creepy male cops!

I used to see them as heroic until I called on them for help. I have had lots of speeding tickets, but I knew it was my fault so no problemo. Someone close to me was scared her abusive boyfriend was gonna kill her. She had no car or phone, it was winter and I was 30 minutes away. I told her to wait at the corner store pay phone she was calling from, then I called the cops. Over 90 minutes later, they show up (not a big city), they listen to boyfriend try to snitch on drug dealers (to get a deal) while lecturing my friend about her poor choices. Did I mentioned she returned home to potential murderer while waiting during that 90 minutes? It's cold in Colorado in winter, she didn't have a coat, it was around 1 in the morning. Later, when police found boyfriend with bruises (from her defending herself), she was jailed, and lost medical job! Police told me since I didn't witness the abuse, neither I nor they could do anything basically unless he killed her. I don't hate them, but see less use for them. I want my tax dollars back to finance my own security.

They are human and have flaws. Those said flaws, will play out on how they interact with the general public. Some go into it wanting to do the right thing, others are driven by less than stellar reasons. At the end of the day, I am grateful that they are there...makes me think of the saying, "when you only have seconds, the police are minutes away."

I shouldn't feel this way, since my job is kind of in the law enforcement arena, but -

it seems like they just drive around, looking to get people in trouble for dumb $hit. it bugs me.
