You scared him. He thought you were looking for an exclusive long term thing. I think so too.
At his age, he believes that there are still many virgins to convert and he is not ready to give up all the other fish in the sea for a long term commitment to a woman who says she "loves" him.

Sorry this happened to you, men hey, very complicated creatures. At a guess, he did not want to get too serious, he got scared and backed off sadly. Really sorry, hurts now, but you will and can get over him.
