Why Am I Doing This to Myself?

Okay, so I've been kind of depressed lately and just today I started drinking some of my mom's wine. At first it was just a sip, but now I'm taking it in gulps. The only thing that's keeping me from downing the whole bottle is that I'll definitely get caught cause we only have two open bottles in the whole house. I know I'm way to young to be drinking (I'm 17), and I'm still not sure what's driving this urge in me to do it. Please help!

We drink and do other things to numb away our feelings. I did it for 25 years. I went through 25 years of hell. I still have the urges to make it all go away, but that is not life. I would strongly suggest you get your feelings about your depression out in the open. Talk to a school counselor, your parents, an older relative. Get into some counseling to catch it before it gets out of control. You seem very smart to recognize this in yourself. I wish I had been so lucky. Good luck to you and don't be too hard on yourself.

its the idea of being older. women grow up way to fast because society expects them to be a little more mature at a younger age. its not a bad thing to drink a sip, but only when you're allowed. ask your mother if you can have a glass with her. teach you how to drink it

Maybe to escape your problems, when you start doing something "bad," it's easy to just continue on with it...especially when there's nothing else going on. Why are we always doing things over the top? Eat a little, eat a lot. Drink a little, drink a lot. Lie a little, lie a lot. You get my drift right??

OK. I have struggled with alcoholism. It makes you feel better, then you feel much worse. Then you have to have some more to make that go away. Then it feels even worse again cause you knew you didn't want to have it.

Alcohol is a depressant. It makes you happy, then sad, then happy, then sadder as a perpetual habit, if it is being used to mask sadness. The problem grows & if you are like me it will explode in a public embarrassment a long time later in a sea of depressive humiliation.

Far better to face up to having depression, having some guts & asking for help in the first place. It has to be done sooner or later anyway, it won't go away on it's own. It is very common & nothing to be ashamed of! Taking medication is much better for you than using depressants as a short term solution. Or if not that, then therapy. It will help you a lot more in the longer term.

You will make your own decisions. I am simply sharing the things I learned the hard way.

Honestly, if you are young I think the urge is more related to the "idea" of drinking than actually doing it. Lets face it, when we are young it's all very sensationalized both in favor of and against it.

It seems very adult, it seems wrong and hearing stories about OTHER people abusing it might even make you think it makes you feel good or can help with problems.

Allot of times we do things we know are wrong BECAUSE of the reasons we think they are wrong. Just stop, it's not worth it and it's not a healthy mindset to be following. The urge to spontaneously start gulping down wine didn't come from you or the wine... and hopefully if you can realize that you can drop it.
