Embracing impermanence. Laughing at the face of death. Embracing that death is a normal and eventual process for anything that will live.

Humanity's obsession with death, since we're more detached from the life cycle then we used to be. If everyone killed what they ate, the world would be a different place.

It's a popular symbol for what is called a "death culture" or a culture fixated on violence and death. Skulls and dancing skeletons have always been popular symbols among more superstitious and shamanistic cultures and the more violent the more popular they are. Our most popular sports, movies, music, etc. are all extremely violent. The US has the highest rates of homicide, rape, child abuse, spousal abuse, etc. in the developed world with the highest rates of these all occurring in the Bible Belt. Our preachers, talk show hosts, politicians, etc. all routinely rant and rave and resort to trash talk.
