    I think it has something to do with the body evacuating the uterine lining....maybe something like mini contractions as that is cleared away. That's why you can have much more pain if you have a tendency to have clots. And if you are retaining water at the time, and all tender in your abdomen...that doesn't help. You might want to google this Q.

    Because your uterus is contracting and pressing strongly against blood vessels, depriving the muscle of oxygen... Hence, cramp.
