Because doing stuff is hard. And if you wait around long enough, someone else will do it.

Different reasons for different people... Could be they are depressed. Could be they do not feel good because something physical is wrong with them. Could be lack of responsibility and they would rather do what they want to do and not what needs done. I am sure there is not one reason for everyone.

Because "they can't be bothered"! Its the general sludgy atmosphere that we live in on this planet.

Valentine nails it pretty well, people are "lazy" for a variety of reasons ranging from low self esteem to depression, to having no interest in the things around them

Because they're old and tired and have given up caring.

Personaly I'm dead lazy but it's because I have a constant feeling that whatever I try to do I will fail at. And yes that includes tidying my room.

Because it's easier to do nothing, than to do something. And sometimes it's an issue of being tired, from doing something else all day. That's mainly my issue, when I'm lazy sometimes. It's because I've spent so much energy on something else for the day and moving from the comfy chair seems not worth it!

Wow, that's not easy to answer. Sometimes people are catered to all their life and don't think about doing things for themselves and just feel entitled to having everything done for them. Sometimes people go through a bad period of depression and can't seem to get out of it or "unstuck". Like when you have too many unpleasant tasks and you don't know where to start and you feel like you will never get done anyway... being that overwhelmed can make you lazy.

This question is very interesting from an evolutionary point of view.

I think that for evolutionary purposes, laziness is more an absence of something than a trait purposefully developed. Sort of like the same reason why NOT everyone can do 308 * 64 in their head.. Why do people fail to do things, in general? I could be wrong, though. Maybe laziness *does* serve a purpose. Gives the subconscious more room to work, perhaps, when the conscious isn't very active and struggling with something.

Another way of thinking about it is that we're conditioned to seek the simplest working solution in order to inspire us to develop intelligence. The backside of this medal would be laziness, making us to varying degrees downprioritize anything that isn't of extreme importance.
