Why are so many (not all) Christians against abortion?

It was my understanding that Christianity says that God made humans and granted them free will, and that he wanted humans to make their own choices, not force them to do the "right" thing (that's what Satan wanted to do because he wanted the glory). So doesn't it make more sense for a Christian to support the pro-choice side and let women make that decision for themselves using their free will (like God wanted)?

I'm not aiming to offend anyone with this question, this is a serious question, so please don't be rude.

I SAID NOT TO BE RUDE BECAUSE I AM NOT BEING RUDE TO ANYONE. IF YOU CANNOT RESPECT MY REQUEST THEN DON'T ANSWER AT ALL OR I WILL DELETE YOUR QUESTION.

Woodinhouse-- not everyone who gets pregnant did so on "purpose" or because they were just "stupid." My little sister just so happens to be a condom baby. And what about women who are raped-- are they asking for it and being stupid?

Its a short answer really:

Christians believe all life begins at conception (not birth)

And the commandment.....Thou shalt not kill..... applies to this type of life as well

I hope that helps you with the answer you were looking for.

There are many circumstances during which a woman can conceive a child, and these days, should it be difficult to raise this child, there are many good families who will give the child a wholesome upbringing, thereby relieving the birth mother of the task.

Not sure how they got off on the anti abortion thing the bible says nothing about it.
An embryo is a brainless pile of slime and a fetus is a brainless chunk of meat so who knows?

I am a Christian who is grateful to be living in a strongly secular nation (Singapore) where the right to practice (or not practise) the religion of our choice -- or be an atheist or agnostic -- is vigorously protected. Only Jehovah's Witnesses and Scientologists are prohibited from setting up home here, and it is against the law to preach Christianity to a Muslim. I personally do not support abortion, but my understanding of Free Will allows me to support *abortion RIGHTS*, so that women who choose to exercise their Free Will to have an abortion can do so in a safe and humane way. For me, the "moral" consequences of having an abortion are a private matter of personal conscience; this must NEVER be imposed on a population where people of many different value systems and belief systems are supposed to be equal citizens. Hope that didn't sound delirious. AP

because free will means using a condom or using birth control before getting preg, and making grown up choices before engaging in sexual behavior, and not imposing your will on an unborn child, who has every right you do to survive, for goodness sake a baby is still a baby even inside you, they feel, they move, they smile, what kind of humans have we become when it's ok to murder are own children, no other species does this unless in danger, we have become unfeeling individuals when the life of a child becomes meaning less, and more and more people are killing their children and putting them in garbage cans because we no longer value human life, choose before you have sex not to get preg, now days if you get preg on accident your doing on purpose or your stupid

some of these people make me sick

i have been brought up in the church and while im unsure of religion there are two things i learnt there that i stick by

1st being sex should be between a married couple
thats a whole issue in itself but in a way it can tie in with abortion

whether or not you are married or single whether you are an accident or the product of something horrible and life changing

a life is a life

each baby has the potential to grow and be something amazing. unfortunately unwanted babies are often unwanted right the way through life. Babies who are the product of rape.. i can understand why a mother would want to abort this child but someone else may desperately want it and if that baby has the potential to be loved by someone who will truly love it why waste a life

the christians are portrayed as extreme. some is there own doing. some of it is just hype but at the end of the day they preach the same message.. that is love and value.

everyone should have an equal opportunity. at the very least this is life

Because they are "political christians" not real ones. According to them abortion is wrong under "every" circumstance, but they support an invasion by a lying government where innocent people are killed everyday. Some how "that's" ok.

The last five or six studies show that there is no statistical difference in percentage of people supporting/opposing or, indeed, having abortions based on religion or lack thereof.

If you are in favor, or you are opposed, great. But don't blame your religion. Your income level, education level, or age is a greater factor, but not all that much.

Because the Pope is against it. There was no abortion in Biblical times, so they aren't getting it from there.

Cause they might not have been too "wanted" themselves.

God did give us the freedom of choice....but, does that mean that we always make the right one? Of course not.

I am a Christian, and I believe that conception, is when life begins....all the DNA is present....the only thing the embryo/fetus needs, is time in the womb.....time to grow.

You fail to mention, that most of the time, abortion is the choice of convenience.....it's not convenient to have a baby at this time, etc....It's so easy to disregard human life....all because we just aren't ready, now....

It's a good thing that your mother didn't feel that way....otherwise, you wouldn't be writing this question, and your sister would not be here, either.

It's not just a Christian thing, and it is murder.
If you are not prepared to raise and look after a child, then dont have unprotected sex!!!!

Because they are terrified that eventually the "brown" people are going to outnumber us, and that we musn't run out of future soldiers to fight those godless heathens. (Google Quiverfull Movement.) These are the same zealots who are only opposed to abortion up until the point that the kid is born, and then could give a shiat less what happens to it, be it an abusive home, crushing poverty, hopeless lack of opportunity and resource, or horrible disfiguring birth defect.

I am not a Christian, but I am also against abortion.
I think that killing innocent beings is more brutal than any other crimes. Even the lower creatures don't kill their offspring.

Not all Christians believe that life begins with conception. Even Catholics didn't believe that orginally. I believe St Thomas Aquinas asserted that life didn't begin until about the fifth month when movement was detectable. I personally believe that lif doesn't begin until the soul enters the body. That could be at almost any time theoretically, but probably not before movement. Some souls don't enter until just before birth. Still births are often the result of a soul deciding NOT to enetr for some reason. Some mothers feel that they know when this happens, usually after the fifth month. I don't think a soul will enter a fetus until it is viable, which even with out advances in medicine is seldom before the fifth month. So, if a fetus or embryo is not viable, thru the third month for sure, then aborting it is not killing a life. If it is not viable, you cannot kill something that cannot live on its own. This is when most abortions are performed. After the point of viability 5th or 6th month, I believe it is still the woman's choice whether to bear and raise a child or not. It is not the responsibility of anyone else what she does with her body at this point.

I personally am against abortion 99%. Abortion could and is by most people as murdering an innocent baby that was meant by God to live. I am not a Christian, but I was raised as such and am familliar with beliefs: I would never abort a child unless, by allowing it to live, I would be causing it pain. I don't mean disfigurement, I mean painful genetic diseases or aids. Maybe this makes me a bad person, but i would not want a child to be in pain.

***DISCLAIMER***this was originally a blurb turned damn near essay because i am quite passionate about this. what i am talking about is controversial & this is simply my take on it. if you have questions, hate mail or whatever else, please direct your comments & messages to me, not here on this question board. this is not the place to start arguments.

my take on it as a christian woman is i am pro-choice. my definition of pro-choice does not mean that i am pro-abortion. in fact, i am what i believe to be pro-life because i am pro people living their lives & making their own choices. i figure god loves us unconditionally & we have all fallen short of glory. we are saved by his grace & mercy. we are given the ultimate gift of free will so it is our choice to do was we will. ideally, we would not put ourselves in situations that make us have to make such tough choices. i know in the case of rape (tho over 2/3 of rape cases are with people the victim knows) it is a random event. i also know that some people truly are responsible (i know a few condom/pill babies myself). i also know people who abuse it by acting as if its a form of birth control. i don't respect those people. i also know that it is a hard thing to endure. i have never been pregnant & don't plan to. i have sat in a clinic holding the hand of & walking a friend through her process.

i don't think the government should get involved with something so private & intimate. i think it violates our basic human & civil rights. i understand that people feel strongly that life begins at conception while others believe life begins at birth. i personally am indifferent & my position won't be stated here because its irrelevant. christians have the reputation of taking a very right wing conservative political stance on issues surrounding same sex marriage, abortion & other issues in line with their faith. last i checked the bible their really isn't anything about abortion or same sex marraige...least not in the new testament. i wouldn't have an abortion. in fact, despite condoms & the pill, if i ended up pregnant next month, i wouldn't be headed to my local planned parenthood to pay $500 for an abortion. its just not me. i care enough about integrity, life & making the most of all circumstances. what i won't do though, is impose my beliefs on others, especially if that right is already available. i think politicians who try to reverse roe vs. wade make statements like that to get the christian or right or conservative votes. in reality, these people don't touch the issues once in office. they have bigger fish (issues) to fry.

then again there is the point about some people don't really deserve to be parents. all these kids stuck in the child welfare system. all these kids being orphaned & not adopted. all these kids in messed up broken abusive homes. so yea. i think some people do their fetuses a load of good by not being a parent when they aren't ready. i've seen the good/bad/ugly of the thing & at the end of it all i think people should have their basic rights. i mean we have the right to free speech. we have the right to our own faith. why not have the right to our own bodies?
