Why are some books like people in that they are easy to read for some and like a foreign language to others?

What allows us to have the ability to read people like a book whereas some people miss everything between the two covers when it comes to others?

As far as books go, there are 2 that I "gave up on," which I hate to admit, but here they are: "The English Patient," & "Cold Mountain."

I don't get people that are drastically different than me. Three out of my four brothers I can read SO easily....the fourth I have to ask him what he's thinking regularly. He's just really into everything I don't get and we're opposites. I confound him too.
