Why are some people so 'down' on us prostitutes ?
Just why do we get funny looks and, rarely granted, spat at for being a sex worker? It's human nature to engage in sex...we provide a service...

Excellent question! The simple answer is that they are threatened by the profession's unvarnished, raw honesty. They have an intense emotional need to feel that they have nothing in common with prostitutes, and when people hit that point they become judgmental and cruel. -- There is a wonderful line a Steve Winwood song that goes, "The prostitute is standing on the corner, suffering so much pain to be alive, she's so real, life itself bows down before her, she couldn't make that 9 to 5". I love - "life itself bows down before her". You see, we are all prostitutes in one way or another, but people don't like to be reminded of that, so when they see it in its most pure form, they recoil and lash out.

James Joyce said that prostitutes are poor business people because they "buy dear and sell cheap" - in other words, they start with something precious - themselves - and put a low price on it. I can't disagree, but this is the only aspect of the profession that troubles me. Beyond that, I say, go for it. It's the "oldest profession" because there's a need for the service. I, myself, love prostitutes (not physically). I was first exposed to them at 17, strolling the boulevards of Rio at midnight. Their relationship with life is very sharply defined, very precise, very unsentimental.

Because sometimes, it's easier to judge people we don't know - ie people like yourself - rather than our husband/boyfriend/partner.

I think it's appauling the way some people treat prostitutes and I totally disagree with spitting on them or physically abusing them.

I actually had a prostitute come and ask me if I was alright last night because I was sitting on the floor in the street waiting for someone to let me into the club and I think she thought I was hurt. she was sweet.

People are afraid and you challenge their values, they don't mean to be (I mean the attitude, not the spitting, that's ******' stupid) But It's hard for them. You may well be the same if you hadn't lead the life that you have. don't take it personally sweet.

At this point - social stigma. Monkey see, monkey do. Prime time TV, family friendly programs and such won't mention it, the feeling of taboo gets easily across.

As for a few reasons why it became and stays social stigma -

it's not an educated line of work (thus easy to think of as a 'cheap way out'.. Most people see, for instance, a teacher as a title that proves that you have more competence) and it's considered good tact to be choosy about who to have sex with (for biological and social reasons).

I see plenty of theories up there, some I agree with, some not. I'm glad you said "some" people, because I think the profession should be legalized, unionized and paired with other services that help people (massage, aromatherapy - you pick the aroma ;>), facials, pedicures, etc.) Here's a side story for you. In 8th grade, we had a teacher who told us girls in "health" class that she'd married her husband because he had money, not because she loved him. She showed us her jewelry, talked about her house and fine clothes. It made many of us uncomfortable, but only one of us was able to verbalize it quickly. Her name was April (I remember her wit and courage to this day), and she said, "So, you're a prostitute." The fool teacher got mad and slapped her. We all reported her, and the be-atch got canned for hitting a student. April was correct. If sex is something you like and are willing to barter in exchange for goods or services, "prostitute" is the name given to this profession. I think the name should be changed, too. Sex is a human need that provides comfort, nurturing and relief, reduces anxiety and increases 'feel good' neurotransmitters in the brain. Some people are not in a socially "approved" relationship. Why put a profession down when it provides a great service?

I think it's just the title that gives the wrong impression...especially when it has been the cause of so many marriages or relationships breaking up because a guy or girl doesn't know enough to be loyal to the person they are with (which is never the prostitutes fault...but it gets blamed on them sure enough)...because people are idiotic and judgemental and the majority of them could care less if they hurt another human being....don't let it bother you sweetie! Peace love faith ~Rae.

Her around Texas it's very hard to be a prostitute. After Katrina, all the criminals(fugitives) rolled into Texas like no tomorrow. They ****** up our system. Now it's dangerous to be a prostitute. The safest place place in Texas is Austin, But it's still messed up. 4 have been found dead in this city.

The judgment on the career has come from "****" to "****! She could be in trouble!"

We no longer have Houses where you can go in and then go home. Now it's you pick the girl up and never see her again. More than before you don't see people in my neighborhood glare at the woman, they ask them if they're okay. We care for them now.

From where you are, it's probably different, but over here it's changed a bit.

Well, i sure don't.
I can see how being a sex worker would be liberating.
As long as you are happy in your life, then who gives a **** about what other people have to say. Our world is full of ignorant ******** anyway who are merely afraid of the unknown. I reckon a lot of women out there would LOVE to get paid money to have sex - one of the greatest acts a human can do.
Think of all the lonely housewives out there who are virtually raped by their husbands every night and for what? To cook his meals and give him children. .
You are not the one who has no self-respect.
Good on you!

We have hookers standing on the corners in our neighborhood. I don't look down on them. In fact I feel sad for them because many of them are so young and they're giving themselves to nasty old men. And for what? to keep their pimp from having to get a real job? I couldn't imagine spending my day walking up and down the same blocks again and again looking at houses where people live and raise families knowing that they will probably never have that.

My only complaint is that the scum bags who come to our area looking to buy drugs seem to think it's a great area to break into houses We've been robbed twice. The next one isn't going to be so lucky.

Prostitutes are people too. The reasons they are looked down on are as numerous as the people who do the looking down. I think it should be made legal, and should be made into a legitimate business.....not only for the safety and welfare of the public and neighborhoods, but for the safety and welfare of the prostitute her or him self. I dont think that prostitutes should be out on the streets....its just not the safest or easiest way to make a living. I dont patronize prostitutes because I am happily married, but the thought has crossed my mind in the past when I was alot lonlier.

You got all the answers from everyone else on this forum, so I don't need to add my two cents. If you feel down, just remember what all these people think of the people in that profession. You're still a human being and with that you get my respect. I just hope you will one day find a much better profession, both in pay and social stature.

Because they've been led to believe their whole lives that sex is dirty.

I am penacostal and i don't believe in anything but the kjv of scripture.the bible explains sex as a loving thing shared by a husband and wife. in other words it is a terible sin to be a prostitute. Now i'm not saying that prostututes are evil demens. because some are probly just lost in the crowd looking 4 a light to shine through. jesus christ is that light and worldly thing will just keep pushing you back into the crowd even if u have that light in the palm of your hand. the bible says that ignorance shall not be an excuse which basicly means that everyone in the entire world will know the name jesus, no matter once or a million times. i will pray for you

The seventh commandment of the Old Testement , Exodus 20:14 says," You shall not committ audtery."
Yet does this give us a right to judge? Clearly not, because as we read Jesus in the book of Luke. We find Mary Magdalene.
Luke 8:1-2
Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God.The twelve discpiles were with Him,and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases;Mary (Magdalene) from whom seven demoons came out..

Many believe that She is the prostitute who washed Jesus feet in Luke7:37-50.

And behold, a women in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil,
and stood at His feet behind Him weeping;and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head;and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil.
Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this,he spoke to himself, saying," This man ,if He were a Prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him,for she is a sinner (prostitute)
And Jesus answered and said to him," Simon,I have something to say to you." So Simon said,"Teacher say it."
Jesus Spoke." There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denaril and the other fifty. And when they had nothing with which to repay,he freely forgave them both.Tell Me,therefore which of them will love him more?
Simon answered and said ," I suppose the one he forgave more." And Jesus said to him,"You have rightly judged."
Then Jesus turned to the woman and said to Simon," Do you see this woman? I entered your house;you gave me no water for my feet, but she washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head.
You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in.
You did not anoint My head with oil,but this woman has anointed my feet with fragrant oil.
Therefore I say to you,her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little."
Then jesus to to her," Your sins are forgiven."

It is a sin to committ adultrey, yet we have to right to judge over that because we are sinners all. When God speaks to the heart of a sinner then that sinner will feel, see and know that sin. I feeling of shamful guilt will flood you. That is the call of repentance.
Unfortunatley There are many people whom will condemm people for their sins.Yet we are sinners all so its hypecritical to do so as we see with the woman accused of adultrey in John 8:3-11

Then the scribes and pharsees brought to HIm a woman accused of adultrey. And when they has set her in the midst, they said to HIm," Teacher, this woman was caught in adultry,in the very act."
" now Moses in the law, commanded us that such should be stoned to death, but what do you say?"
This they said testing Him,that they might have something of which to prove He is false. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger,as though He did not hear.
So when they continued asking Him,He raised up and said to them," He who is without sin among you,let him throw a stone at her first."
And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground.
Then those who heard it,being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
When Jesus raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman,He said to her," Woman where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?
She said," No one Lord," and Jesus said to her,"Neither do I condemn you;go and sin no more.

In this I find that yes Jesus did acknowledge that she sinned and that all those accusers were sinners to.
So I say,yes I think prostitution is sinful, yet I being that of a mere sinner to have no right to cast stones at you or what you do..

I don't dislike prostitutes as a rule or anything. I've never used one or anything so I feel like I can't personally hate on anyone. My aunt was a prostitute though, and she wasn't too cool. She neglected her kids who ended up being raised by various people. So, that's not cool. Plus one time she shoved soap in my mouth for saying "damn." Which is kind of strange considering she was addicted to crack at the time. And a prostitute. I guess even a woman who can't raise her own kids has to keep morality afloat somewhere.

Beats me. I mean, you provide an important service. Some people just look down on you if you don't have a glamourous, high powered job.

It's the same for cleaners. If you work as a cleaner, people start to think they're better than you are, or they're too good to to talk to you.
