Because at some point one of the two will not share back or keep the feelings of mutual appreciation and openness going. It can be a struggle, one usually wants to dominate things. It's a natural thing actually.

there are? I wouldn't know since I don't really have any. Maybe it is a competition that makes people step up to the plate, like a self-improvement competition??
The best answer I can think of is, "it is human nature"....hmm...

There are not. Every relationship that I have or ever will have is based on one thing, reciprocity. You get what you give. Chicks especially, usually define "friend" much more loosely than I do. I suspect that what you have I would not consider a friend.
