It might be your perception. In Tina Fey's book, "Bossypants" she complains about how her large, dark, Greek eyes were out of fashion when she was young, because girls with small eyes were "in". I read that and thought, When, in the history of man, have small eyes been considered attractive?
Except in extreme cases, who notices or mentions a long face, besides a saleperson trying to sell you a pair of glasses?
A Short, round face implies the girl is also petite from her body. Longer face doesn't necessarily mean a heavy body, but it's not as symmetric with a small body than a small square face.
I on't think anyone knows why these things shift.
