You can call them anything you want. I will not call them African-American because the term doesn't make sense to me. They are black.
Well they aren't black really....most are brown
And for most of them to keep harping on about " slavery" is wearing very thin......ancient Britons were sold into slavery by the Romans, inter village slavery was rife when the " white man" first landed in Africa AND it still is today!
I call my black friends(and all black people) black and they really dont seem to mind and I don't care if someone calls me white. Its all fine so long as you don't use crude terms
I have black friends from Trinidad and black friends from the U.K., neither wants to be called African-American, because they aren't. Now my white friend from South Africa, he insists he is African-American.
Whites haven't lived through 200 years of slavery and outright racism.
That's ignorant if you though
why call anyone anything? I mean really. and I was at one time in my life very racist but more truthfully very ignorant because I saw other races as the cause of our countries woes but this was what the government wants, ... keep us divided, suspicious and hateful towards one another instead of being a united people who would stand for very little of the sonofabitchery that is going on in the federal government. we are all of us humans who have the same want,, and that is to be loved and understood. sure it is natural to identify and group together but african american? come on they are american as the rest of us americans. heres an idea offer a hand and your name and get to know someone so you dont have to say that black guy or that white dude, but you would beable to say hello so and so hows it going...
I am indeed black, and it was a long road getting there. I've been "colored", "Negro", "Half-Breed", the infamous "n" word and other comparable epithets. But to answer the original question, we call you "white" because that's what YOU insisted you were. Whites have been the ones naming everything and everybody, at least in the Western world. In the 80's there was a rush to reclaim ones ethnicity, so those who'd previously just been "white" became "Irish-American", "Italian-American", "Polish-American",etc .Most American blacks had no known African country, language or culture affiliation; that was taken away during the slave trade. (That's the harsh truth of it.) So "African-American" was a way for some to honor the connection, with no other specific information. But many of us never had a problem being "black", and so identify as well.
I say black all the time, nobody seems to care.
In my opinion I think it is only reasonable to call someone (Insert nationality here)-American if they were born in another country and moved to America after birth and obtained American citizenship. If they were born in America then shouldn't they just be an American? Once someone told me they were an African-American so I asked what part of Africa they were from (just to see what reaction I would get), they said they had never been to Africa.
I took a DNA test and found I my forbearers were Moroccan Arabs. I AM an American of Moroccan descent. I am ethnically a black American. That's the only group that would ever welcome me. I'd like to see a day when we could be a united country.
To me, if you are a citizen of a country then just be that. Recently a fellow has started appearing on TV here in Japan. His skin color is black but nobody calls him that, nobody calls him an African-Japanese, why? Because he was born an raised in Japan, the only language he knows is Japanese, regardless of his skin color he is a Japanese. He introduces himself as a Japanese (he has a translator with him) when on location in different countries. Why can't people just be satisfied to be a regular citizen of their country without any additional labels?
Lol good point . Don't understand. Why don't we make a difference
Naturallytanned had the best answer. Black is a catchall term for a range of skin pigments. African-American is a (general) cultural group.
I wasn't aware that black was considered offensive, but let's say it is for the purpose of argument.
The reason why you can be called white without issue is because nobody is offended by it. Even if someone meant it as an insult, you wouldn't take it as such. Why would you? White people are not the targets of racism in any meaningful way.
I think "black" gradually became an accepted appellation. What would you call a white person from South Africa who became American? African-American? Moreover Libyans and Egyptians are hardly black.
I've been around for a long time, and I have heard people from different races go through stages about what they want to be called. At one point it was very politically incorrect to say "Indian"...now it's not good to say "Native American"...I remember when the black Panthers wanted to be called black, and not Negro...so I guess it kind of depends what era you are living through....and what people feel is important about themselves and what kind of statement they want to make about themselves. That's what the name issue is all about....identity.
they call me white I call them black.
They need to lighten up!
Maybe when WE command the same type of respect the Jewish community now does...but seriously, who has the right to tell someone still experiencing discrimination "get over it" ?
When I read this i first thought that you were a "white", and you was incredibly ignorant! No offense, but do you know that the white race is the most ignorant race in history? Think about this. Why are we naming things? Why do we want to put people in other groups than us? Couldn't it be because we think we're better than everyone? another thing you say is that "the way we name things promotes a higher intelligence" is just a saying of proving YOUR stereotype! The stereotype, which blacks think is the ignorant and racist type! Why do we have to be superior? Why not just get over that we've thought that "blacks" we're animals?
am offended whiteman
What I don't understand is, black is negro in Spanish, but there seem to be a problem with the Spanish word then it's English translated one.
we should be able to call them black people, I call black people black because of my age, there use to be very few black people now there are so many that they want to be equal, but it does not change things they are still black people, if they mix with white people and have children, what they are called is more serious?
most black people that i know would prefer the term black, as opposed to african american. its the liberal lackeys who use this term. the term african american was invented in 1984 by jessie jackson. he doesn't speak for the majority of us, yet the ignorant white media took up the term.
I don't think it matters but I do feel they should just be called American because none of them were born in Africa. so why call them that. Should we be called German Americans or British Americans . No totally retarded
because black people are the ones that are predudist. god only made one race. the human race. read job in the bible, even he understood.
It must be politics. Why can't we call blacks negros? another " N" word. We can call whites "crackers" or European Americans.
I prefer to be called black. In England it's afrocarribean. I am just black chuu
