It's more a matter of culture for example Japanese does not have an "L" sound, but second generation Japanese- pronounce "L" sounds perfectly. If this is "ax" versus "ask" in the black culture it was originally a regional dialect carried on by lack of educational opportunities or what one hears around them. I still cannot pronounce the "R" on corner correctly without thinking about it. I pronounce it "conner" as a result of my childhood surroundings. So mispronunciation doesn't bother me and I tend not to make to much of it.

I hate to think that in our schools, kids are being taught to mispronounce words for the sake of maintaining cultural differences.

I don't think that is happening but let me use this example. In the American culture I would bet more people say "wanna" than "want to" and if I'd said that in school I would have "gotten" my hand whacked with a ruler. The point I was making was not a grammatical one, but a one based on people using the "identification" of difference" in a pejorative way.
