Adam and Eve must not be regarded in the same way as we judge human nature today. They were, up until that point, without sin. Innocent yes, but also much stronger in will power and with the keenest intelligence and understanding. The temptation was not only to disobedience but also to imitate God in His omniscience. Given their dignity and strength it was an entirely reasonable test of their love and fidelity. And they spent some 900 years doing penance for their sin. Hence we see the gravity of sin. But also, that in spite of it, this couple eventually achieved great sanctity.

If you have read the book East of Eden by John Steinbeck then it talks about a saying call "Timshel" and it means "Thou Mayest"; you see, God is a god of choices there is no do this so it is all up to your character on whether to do the right thing or not, Adam & Eve chose a different choice, granted it was not the choice God wanted but they basically decided our futures and that's the way life is.

Eden is defined as paradise. Knowledge is defined as a means of discovering-or state of knowing-the truth. Eden was a garden. Garden's grow and bear fruit and life with time. A "tree" of knowledge would also grow with time. The tree would then be a growing source for the truth of good and evil. Evil has no place in paradise, so perhaps knowledge of it would destroy the paradise of a blissful conscious. Maybe God wanted Adam and Eve to live and grow in a safe, happy place, like a protective parent shielding their developing children from premature experience of evil. Children could not grow properly with the knowledge and reality of an adult, could they? Perhaps Adam and Eve were God's fruit--they needed time to grow and be cultivated before blooming, or they wouldn't grow at all. In this way did God intend for a perfect race of his children by raising them in the perfect home? Would he have yielded said knowledge when assured that Adam and Eve had developed enough to understand it? Because if you truly understand good and evil, as a child of God you would repel evil and the serpent itself, knowing what it was beneath the allure of temptation. But God gave us free will to make us human, and thus knew Adam and Eve could fail through sin. I think that's why God also offers unconditional forgiveness, granted said sinner repent and thus realize said sin was wrong, and then strive for good.

I believe it was not so much that God "didn't want Adam & Eve to touch it" ...more like He "didn't want Adam & Eve to touch it" ...NOW.
I'm thinking He probably had some time EVENTUALLY that He was thinking for Adam and Eve to "taste the fruit" ....just that Eve got a little ahead of herself .....seeing Dad's car keys just SITTING on that table just "WAITING" for her to go take that BMW for a spin. She wasn't patient enough to WAIT for Dad to get around to teaching her how to drive and help her get her driver's license.
Bottom line: It's not that they weren't supposed to touch it .....just not at the time they did.

EXACTLY!!! THAT'S MY QUESTION!!! I have asked this many times in bible study. It seems pretty CRUEL to have placed this temptation in the midst of Adam and Eve! People say, "But they had free will"! That's not true! Free will is based on knowledge! First, the identity of Satan was kept hidden. How can you fight a demon; when you don't know he exists? Second, telling them that there is a "Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil", implies they lack. Why give them cause to believe they are imperfect? It's all pretty SUSPECT to me! It reinforces my long held belief that God exists, but that he is capricious and very exacting!

Answer me this: Most religions have mythology around a sacred tree and those that quest for its fruit. Why is it that only the Judeo-Xtian religions view it as a sin? The rest view it as a Hero's Journey.

To see if they would listen and obey him, and obviously they didn't, that was their doing, not God's

It's that axiom: "There is no such thing as a free lunch". Their job was to stay away from the Tree but nooooo....and yes, Eve gave the apple to Adam- he didn't have to take it - he knew better...but noooooo.
...and here we are!

There is no free will without at least one way to choose good or bad and what more appropriate of a thing to put there for that one rule HE gave at the beginning than something which would give the knowledge of guilt when one committed a sin with it.
