He didn't. He hung on the cross and then was put in a tomb. Then after 3 days, he rose from the dead.

Why do people continuously ask questions like this, knowing they're going to see everyone on EP bash the Christians??

If you're referring to Jesus being "dead" for 3 days before rising, the reason for this is related to the moon.

There is a period of 3 days of no visible moon in the sky prior to the new moon, or in this case the the vernal equinox--also known as Easter.

Pagans celebrated this day as it represented (surprise!) death and rebirth. The moon appears to be gone for 3 days, then comes back....just like many other gods and goddesses long before Christ.

I think you are getting the story of Jonah and the whale confused with this.....He was in the whales belly for 3 days and 3 nights...

Jesus, after dying on the cross, was placed in the tomb....and on the 3rd day, arose.

It wasn't 3 days and 3 nights of hanging on the cross. According to the Bible, once the authorities were satisfied with the fact that he was truly dead, they put him in the tomb from which he supposedly rose on the third day. Really, he only spent 2 nights (Friday night and Saturday night) and one full day plus a few hours on Friday evening in the tomb. Jesus probably only spent 3 or 4 hours on the cross.

The number three is symbolism as was used constantly in the Bible and other texts in the period.

He didn't. On Friday, He was hung on a cross and died 3 hours later. He was taken down from the cross and put into Joseph's tomb (not Joseph his father, a different one). On Sunday (the third day), he rose from the dead. Understand it now?
