I know some people I'd like to send the Mercury.
I am guessing it is just easier, There are volcanoes, and toxic gasses on the volatile Venus.
Everyone has answered with regard to Venus not being suited to our interests, but there is very good evidence that Mars holds the key to far more than NASA will admit to regarding our solar systems history and even possibly our origins.

Mars has no atmosphere to speak of, which makes it much easier to explore.
I thought it was something about Venus being too hot to sustain life?
