According to ancient Indian legends there was a Demon named "NARAKA". He was troubling all the people dreadfully. Then SRI KRISHNA who is believed to be a divine incarnation along with his wife SATYABHAMA invaded over the Demon NARAKA. In the great war between KRISHNA and NARAKA the former was tired for a while. Then SATYABHAMA fought with NARAKA and killed him. So in memory of a GREAT WOMAN's victory over the DEMON a festival of two days is being celebrated. The Day of the Death of NARAKA as NARAKA CHATURDASI and the next day as a mark of delightful festive mood of all people DIWALI. NARAKA is considered as the symbol of Darkness or Ignorance and SATYABHAMA is symbolized as SATYA (The TRUTH) the form of KNOWLEDGE. So this festival of DIWALI has been through ages celebrated as the festival of dispelling the DARKNESS of IGNORANCE with the SPARKLING LIGHTS of TRUE KNOWLEDGE.
