Why do atheists only direct their attacks at christians and not at other faiths?

Not that it bothers me, I'm just curious....sorry I don't mean to generalize.

You have GOT to be kidding! lol.. As a muslim, I have had many attacks from atheists. Having been married to one who probably wrote the book on it lemme tell you that persecution is not the sole property of a christian. But I think in many ways the Christian faith and its current international lay-out, structure and procedures lends itself to questions and lends itself to attacks from atheists. Then again, one has to understand that in life EVERYONE thinks he's right, and that does not exclude the atheist, who generally minds his own business until you try to speak to him of God. Do that, and no matter how you believe in God, you'll find yourself under attack. The nature of atheism is to not believe in a God or Creator possibility.

Briefly - a story - a scorpion wants to cross a river. He finally convinces a croc he WILL NOT sting him, please to help - he argues he will not sting him or they both die. But he does - and they do - and when asked why as they sank he replies; It's in my nature. Human nature is individual and thus unique, but it also has its TYPICAL things - like EACH person thinking I AM RIGHT.

I've rarely heard proselytizing from other faiths. I don't get a lot of Muslims knocking on my door telling me I need to accept Allah as my personal Saviour, nor Rabbis condemning me for not taking what is written in the Torah as the literal truth. It seems only Christians are the ones hell bent on saving you whether you want to or not.

Oh, and I'm not an atheist BTW, just not religious.

Why do people of different beliefs (or none) have to attack anyone at all? I have a belief in a God but I find it INCREDIBLY offensive when people with other beliefs try to push their beliefs on me, as if they are right and I am wrong. Why can't people be okay with being different? Those differences are what make life interesting and fascinating to me. I LOVE to hear about other people's opinions and beliefs..it really is interesting. We can learn things from each other if given the chance. I am okay with you if you are an aithiest or a Catholic or a Buddist. Tell me about it. We can be friends. I'll listen intently to your perspective and your beliefs. Then you can listen to mine. I'm not trying to sell you something. I'm just sharing ME with YOU. Can't people just get along!?!?

I can't speak for all atheists, only for myself. As far as I know, most atheists believe ALL religion is fallacious --not just christianity. I personally abhor all gods and/or invisible friends equally.

In Western societies, christianity is more prevalent and therefore more frequently deliberated. Also, christianity is the only religion that actively evangelizes, which many folks find condescending and insulting (and was deadly for indigenous populations worldwide; while spreading the 'good word', missionaries spread diseases which decimated entire nations--I'm sure you can see why people would be pretty butt-hurt about that. I won't even get into holy wars, women's rights, civil rights, deculturalization, heresy/witchcraft trials and all of the other heinous products of rampant religiosity from which we've not yet recovered). But I digress.

I prefer to use the word 'monotheism' (or religiosity) when engaged in discussions of a religious nature because it encompasses all 3 Abrahamic religions (which are all based on the same erroneous book). Note that I say monotheism, not monotheists. It's the belief system I find problematic--the concepts-- not the people.

People of faith tend to be quite sensitive about their religious beliefs and take debates too personally. It's as if religiosity deserves unwavering, unquestionable respect above all things; as if it's not up for debate; as if it's somehow immune to scrutiny; like religion is untouchable. I disagree. I don't think it deserves any more respect than any other unfounded belief or invalid supposition.

I'm sure I have offended my fair share here on EP, for which I apologize. I intend only to provoke thought, ask questions, and incite healthy discussion; not to "bash" a specific person. Stating facts, apparently, can be considered an attack in the eyes of some.

I do my very best to attack all religions equally. What can I say? I believe in "just" bashing.

if you try to cram some mumbo jumbo in my ear, no matter what it be, Christian, Muslim, a giant head of cabbage named bill, or what ever im gonna put you on your ear... i dont go knocking door to door telling people the good word of evolution or the facts about the universe, so dont knock me when i tell you to shove it... its that simple
and as a side note, more often than not im nice till the radicals get upiddy with me. then its go time... thats just me though

I am not opposed to any spirituality - I am only opposed to insititutional religions, with their emphasis on dogma and "received" truth. and their "us" and "them" attitude.

In that matter I am an equal opportunity critic - all of them come in for my sad scorn.

However, it must be noted that I have rarely been evangelized by an Animist or a Hindu. No Jains have ever knocked on my door and tried to foist their particular brand of folly on me in my own home. And Druids and Wickans have almost never sneered at me and banished me to their fantasy place of punishment.

Christians, on the otherhand, my "loving" neighbors, the ones for whom compassion and acceptance are watch words have done all those things.

And helped the Nazi's load my relatives into box cars for extermination and then left for church.

Let's be fair. Atheists don't agree with any faiths. I think it just appears that way because there are more Christians than say, Jews or Muslims.

Two reasons:

Well if you are on the receiving end of an "attack" it might appear that every "attack" was directed your way.

The most popular faith in the WESTERN world is Christianity thus lending itself to the most public abuse.

hmmmm interesting question. My experience ( not atheists I'm pagan) has most christains wind up quoting holy writ that they've never read and that they profess to believe in, there by making them easy target for anyone who has read the so called "bible" of which there are many versions. Being knowledgeable about ones faith would help deter such attacks

Because Christianity is the biggest religion. It's no different than people who attack Wal Mart for being the world's largest corporation or Exxon Mobil for being the most profitable oil company.

They're within arms reach? Ya know, knocking on peoples' doors, handing them un-wanted leaflets, books, etc. Send missionaries abound.

Christianity is the faith of the 'western world'. I know, am familiar with, and have experienced christianity. I don't understand Islam and Judaism like i do Christianity. Hence, why Christianity is the specific religion that you will find me questioning.

I have only ever fought christianity because in my experience, it is christians who are most eager to pick at athiests. I, however have also had a very heated argument with a muslim in a chatroom about religion, and although the debate was civil at first, however, he called me a name and being the idiot I am, I took the bait. However, it is by no means I am picking on christianity. I think they're all wrong.
