I think if something traumatic happens, you feel most traumatised after the event instead of during it. That is just my experience, so what you're feeling upset by is the thought of what happened, not by it actually happening.
Over time, memories become less intense, you forget details and you've played it over and over in your mind so many times you become desensitised.Like (1)
