Why do Brits call a cookie a biscut?

I was at a friends house. He is Irish. I live in the USA. I asked for a biscut for my stew and he looked at me like I was an idiot!

Biscuit is the proper term.
Cookie comes from the Dutch word "koekje" (in most Dutch accent pronounced the same as cookie). Those silly Americans should learn English!

To make it more complicated: In Dutch "koek" is a group of fine bakery products not confined to only biscuits. So the meaning might also be different between the UK and the USA.

The word is biscuit. A biscuit is not a cookie. A cookie is a cookie.

Full marks to Samonhissoapbox.

No, I'm with you buddy - but I didn't spot this one.

Biscut = a wound made by the sharp edge of a Hobnob.

Oh come on! If somebody invites me to their house for a meal, I am not going to ask for something they weren't serving!

In the United States, do people eat a full biscuits plus coffee gravy plus greens plus some kind of stew plus bacon plus whatever meal every day? That's a treat, surely?

If I cook oxtail stew for you I will serve it with potatoes and maybe a salad (and something traditional like parsnips and carrots). Maybe even Yorkshire Pudding, if you are lucky. Requests for "biscuits" are like telling your host that the wine is "off" and you want to send it back!

:)

(only teasing)
