Contrary to popular belief cat's don't purr because they're happy. They do it to say ''I mean you no harm. You can trust me.'' Some cats however are terrible liars. Our persian tom would lie on his back purring like crazy and as soon as you tried to stroke his tummy he would claw your hand to shreds!

Same reason why people cry and laugh. Cats dont only purr when they are happy, but also when they are nervouse or scared, same deal with rats, rats make a purring sound like a cat when they are happy or scared.
