I think it's better to ask, 'Am I in a major that will get me a good job?' Business, law, medicine, computer science, IT, engineering all have good prospects. Gender studies, history, anthropology, art, and comparative religion, while interesting, are not likely to result in a promising future. College is expensive, so start using your common sense, get some advice (the internet is also a good place for comparative lists, etc.), and choose something that will help you pay back those student loans in a short period of time. Why do colleges offer impractical majors? Well it makes them money, and it is part of our Liberal Arts philosophy to create well rounded students. But in general, I'd say that it is definitely is the responsibility of colleges and universities to provide more than just fancy facilities for students; they should spend more money on seeing to it that students have good chances for productive work after graduation. But as long as parents tolerate an expensive non-education from universities and students have partying, drugs, sex, and relaxing as their priorities, then this system will never change.

It is caused by demand from lazy and inellectually deprived students with indulgent apathetic parents demanding their children obtain degrees in whatever they like as long as they feel good about themselves.
It reminds me of some of C.M. Kornbluth's writing especially Marching Morons and Space Merchants. Where intellectual weaklings desire the status of a degree and obtain one that is in a completely worthless area.
I suspect many of the most worthless degrees come from the most liberal schools with moronic studies that is self important to them and their friends which accomplishes nothing but to complain.Like (1)
