Why do I pick myself at 37 to make me bleed?
Why do I pick my scabs to bleed now at age 37, realized I actually was a cutter at age 13 after reading- used to make scalp bleed and pulled out my eyelashes. I want to understand.

You probably have a disease called trichotillomania. It's a psychological disorder that pretty much forces a person to pull out their own hair. If you haven't already, you should try to get help for it. That's the only way any kind of disorder is usually able to get better. Rarely does something go away on it's own.

It's actually called dermatillomania, not trichotillomania. They have similar underlying causes. Some believe it may be a form of OCD. Look up dermatillomania here on EP and on other websites and see if you think the definition applies to you. There are self-help books out there for self-injurers to help you examine why and when you do this. I myself am working on overcoming this. Feel free to message me.

I have a relative who was a cutter. What I learned from her as she began to heal, was it was the one pai, the one stress she could control. Everything else in her life was out of her ability to control. And as her stress levels rose, it was her way of coping, of staying ok on the outside where everyne could see. Perhaps you're having a lot of stressors in you life that are effecting your ability to relate with other people. The best thing I could think of for you.. and I don't mean to sound sanctimonious is perhaps find support from others dealing with the same or similiar issues. At least youmay better understand what and why you are doing these things. Good luck and stay safe.

I don't have an answer for you....But, I suggest you see a Counselor for guidance. With their assistance, you may find the answer your seeking within yourself. Best Wishes to You.

I agree that you need to see a counselor, but I also think you are hurting inside for some reason. I hope things get better for you.
