Technology. I was born in the 90's, right before computers were pretty much in every home. I remember waiting my turn on the curb to play street hockey, and now my street is desolate.

Street hockey was among the more enjoyable things kids can do. If you play in front of your house is that really dangerous?

I didn't think so, but parents are a little too overprotective. I remember that I could go no further than a certain house. And my mom would know, because she would watch like a hawk. Parents probably keep their children stuck in the house because they're too busy messing with cellphones and checking their computers. But, that's just my opinion (And, I don't mean all that all parents now are like that. A lot of parents are amazing).

Its a new generation, video games are more exciting than the outdoors. Why go outside and play with sticks when you can be immersed in a whole other world? Do things you couldn't normally do.

I think that maybe parents are over-protective, because your kid can get hurt easily outside and it's not safe and now that there's technology, xbox, ps... Well, my opinion!

I know that my mom wouldn't let me out as such, she was over-protective, but then i started horse riding at a young age, so that's my "play outside"!

No, they haven´t , they are still children.
However, they are not encouraged to socialize this way and are allowed to do it mostly via PC which is a sure way to kill imagination and curiosity about the world around them.

When you were a kid, safety was not too much of a concern and you don't hear missing kids that often. Now a days, almost everyday kids are being abducted.

Because kids are inherently lazy, and parents don't make them.

It's too dangerous for kids to play outside by themselves, and a lot of parents walk till late or am not up to going outside and watching their kids play.

We let pedos run free so our only option is to hide our children now. Reference Phillip Garrido.

Why waste the money and put people in danger from them jail breaking? Execute. Anything else is a waste of my money that I could be spending on my kids instead of the person that wants to use them as sexual objects.

It is amazing how much things have changed since we were kids. I was outside every minute I was free to be. Either on the farm, riding my bike, or collecting crickets by the river. The neighborhoods were full of kids, playing dodge ball in the streets. Now when I'm out on my walks, there are no kids outside, but I can see them through their living room windows, in front of the televisions. Very sad, indeed.

I agree with you, in my neighborhood there is a registered sex offender living several streets away and on that street are kids that are, thankfully, out playing with their Dad.

It's sad. Part of the problem is that a lot of todays kids don't have that dad to go out and play with. Either he's out working two jobs to keep the family together or he's just absent. Sometimes it's both parents. The other night I went over to my surrogate daughter's home to spend some time with my 7 month old grandson. The first thing she did was plant him down in his chair in front of the blaring television. Then she went off into the kitchen and left him there. Apparently, that's how it is everyday. He will sit there quietly for however long she needs him to before she can attend to him again. I see that in too many homes these days. And to think that I was playing out in the streets when I was three years old. Amazing.

Lack of space, technology-based entertainment, lack of knowledge about the benefits of outdoor play, laziness and parental concerns such as paedophiles, murderers and traffic (and who can blame them?).

It's not safe anymore in some places for kids to play outside w/o adult supervision and with so many two income households and single parents there are no adults available to supervise. But if you've got time you could volunteer to be a Big Brother.
