I think I remember reading that the custom originated with Croation mercenaries, who wore scarves around their necks. Somehow, the custom of wearing a scarf around the neck was brought to London and brought into fashion. The scarf gradually transformed to a bow tie, and then eventually to a long narrow tie.

From back when they did not have fitted clothing they used a tie to close the shirt at the neck line.
