I think it's mostly fear, repressed fear of rape and castration. Fear of rejection for lesbians. But don't generalise.

It's a thing they do when around their friends. Alone in public it'll be the same thing. But alone it'll be more subtle. Frankly I think straight guys just feel embarrassed

Because they believe it will somehow reflect on them. I don't know that they are afraid of gay but are afraid of being judged as gay themselves. Just my observations.
