Why do people assume my kids aren't mine? why are they sister quick to assume they are my sister in laws?

im a punk/emo mother of 4. my sister in law is more conservative.
any time i go somewhere with my sister in law and my 4 kids, people compliment my sister in law on how lovely HER kids are, when i thank them and explain that all the kids are mine they give me a horrible look.

Is This A Good Question? (3)

that's the reality of choosing to look different than what people consider "normal" One shouldn't have to conform...but the truth is people are far more judgmental and prejudiced than they realize. It may also be true...that you're kids look like her ....considering they are related and you may less so..if you have altered your appearance to conform with goth/punk norms

I also see that you live in North Dakota...so you likely get looks even without the association of the kids. It might get better if you guys moved one day.

A lot of people just assume that punk/emo people will instantly become conservative when they have children. Incorrect, but many people assume it nonetheless. Or people have a lot of stereotypical notions like that a punk/emo mother would not have well behaved, clean children. In a way, even though these people are total jerks you could perceive it as complimentary.

I've had a lot of people think I was the mother of my friend's little boy because he looks like me...pale with straight dark hair and brown eyes. She and her daughter are darker complexioned with curly hair and lighter eyes. I am not offended by this although I never ever want kids.

none of my kids look like her. and body modifications and style don't change your character. my kids choose their own styles. my oldest is 5 and youngest is 1. i only have one girl (3yr) and she is a glamor punk (leggings and tutus & colored hair clips) my oldest boy is emo, 2yr old is preppy (collar shirts and sweater vest) and my 1yr old just wares what's comfy

I think it's really hilarious and makes you sound extremely immature when you describe your small children as being emo, glamour punk, etc. Wow. I hope that is not the focus of your parenting, adhering to arbitrary pop culture fashion clans...
