Why do people at my job think it's fun to pick on me?

Q&A Home   >  Health   >  Work

I don't blend in well at my work and I get made fun of a lot. There are a lot of Hispanic people who work there and they like to make fun of me in Spanish thinking that I don't know they're talking about me. Other people talk about me because I'm shy and quiet. I feel so stupid for letting something so small bother me but it hurts me.

You're being bullied at work and that's probably illegal. You'll feel so much better when you develop a strategy to address it and not be a victim. Consider talking to the bullies directly first, your manager and HR. Document everything. And in the future, ask "how do I ..." questions, which make you empowered instead of "why" questions that tend to lead to nowhere.

because you allow it, take it easy and learn to laugh. I don't mean go postal or loony, just make a stand and stay there, confidence is all you need. Guess what your beautiful, so smile...

I worked as a waitress in a Jewish catering Hall when I was 21. Two gentlemen (?) were exchanging salacious comments about me in Yiddish, which is similiar to German, which I speak. I understood their conversation and then told them in pretty good Yiddish that I hoped my dad had the opportunity to lust after their daughters too. Come up with something pithy in Spanish. Maybe you'll get a $50 tip like I did

Same reason as they pick on me where I work, because its easy, I don't fight back, they are lazy and brainless. I am too bust doing my best to kick up a fuss. I hope you can find positive people to cheer you up!

You intimidate and frighten them with your quietness, that's how they choose to react. You're also choosing to react the way you are, even though you don't have to react that way at all.

When you decide to not let it bother you and you can throw rudeness in the face of the person being rude, you won't have to put up with this anymore.

It's not stupid to feel bothered by it, there is no reason they should be making fun of you. I would feel the same way in your situation. Sometimes people make fun of others because they are different or easy targets. I was shy and got picked on alot back when I was in high school so I kow how you feel. Must be even worse to have it done at work..

I would feel hurt by what you describe, too. I don't think it's funny or amusing. I feel sorry that you have to go through that, and I hope that some day you can get a better job and get some respect. I guess you just have to deal with it the best you can, but it must be very stressful for you.

'Cause you don't kick 'em in the balls when they do it. Seriously, you gotta stick up for yourself. Demanding respect is the only way to get it.
