It's a european thing..... in the US, we have coffee all the time. Etiquette, varies by culture

Maybe it just tastes good with a sweet dessert. :)
Or maybe it's supposed to keep you from getting sleepy after eating all that dinner. People also tend to have alcoholic beverages after dinner too though. Who knows? Maybe it's just an excuse to pause to have a cup of coffee. I've never heard of someone having a cup of tea after dinner, though perhaps with it.Like (2)

In restaurants, diners can have whatever they want to drink after a meal. But coffee is usually served. And it's served because it's popular.

It kind of seems to help with digestion and clears your palate a bit. I don`t know exactly what the logic is, but I love coffee after dinner. It kind of marks the end of a meal.
