Resolved Question

Why do people feel the need to pick on one person incessantly just because they said something "upsetting"?

So you don't agree with what the person said. Fine. Block them if you must and move on. At first it was just moral outrage on the part of some and fun on the part of others, but it's starting to get out of hand and the question board is being taken up by a petty argument. And by the way, I'm asking this not on behalf of myself but someone else I feel people are being unnecessarily rude to.

I think it's because of this: They're people who must, ABSOLUTELY MUST have EVERYTHING the way they believe it should be. And when they encounter someone who says things they don't like, they MUST try to do something about it -- they cannot allow an "imperfection" to exist the world. It isn't enough to block you, to walk away, to PRETEND you don't exist -- they need you NOT to exist.

But they can't make you go away, and thus they cannot resist the urge to badger you endlessly.

You are right. If you could not ignore a phantom up here, you would never be able to get along with the world.

when someone says something provocative to get attention, they have to be ready for negative attention.

I guess it depends on the level of upset. There are more than a few here who seem to think it's perfectly OK to attack anyone at will, not apologize or explain their behaviour in any way, and then make like nothing happened. I suppose many will just say, "grow a thicker skin" and be done with it, but we all know it isn't quite as straight forward as that. Everyone has their own way of figuring how that system of "correction" should work, I guess.

A person would have to be on the receiving end of the upsetting posting. People will react as they feel they should and if someone is bold enough to post something insulting or upsetting then they should be able to handle the results not matter how many people respond. IF that person or anyone else don't like the back lash then those kinds of postings should not be submitted. It's a two way street on this matter.
