I think it's just the way our culture views sexualities which are different from the standard heterosexual model. I was reading last night about some native american cultures who view LGBT people as being two-spirited - as having male and female spirits within them. For me, being lesbian, I find that idea really helpful and encouraging. I don't know how it would feel to someone who was physically male but felt female all the way through? I also read that native american cultures sometimes regard male and femaleness as defined by the roles a person wants to take on rather than the genitals they're born with. I wonder if that might be a helpful view? As for people saying trans women are not real women, perhaps they define real women as those with XX chromosomes and female anatomy from birth? I think, for me, it all depends of how you look at it and define your terms.

Because of their preconceived, socially conditioned 'beliefs'.
