Why do people mindlessly stick to on political party and vote a straight ticket, time and again?

In the U.S., there are currently two parties who get candidates elected to high office. Right now, the party that currently supports social programs, trade unions, education, a woman's right to choose and marriage equality, all things important to me, are the Democrats. I have no illusions that they love me as an individual, any more than the Republicans do. But these are liberal causes and I am a liberal (progressive). In the 1950's, when the Republican party supported liberal causes like the civil rights movement, my parents voted Republican. But that party has shifted away from their liberal roots, so today my parents (who are still liberal) vote Democrat. Most thinking people vote with the party who best appears to represent the things they believe in and are committed to supporting legislature that establishes those goals.

This is a very good post, and reflects the views of many, I think. My late parents were also Republicans, but as my late mother put it, "I didn't leave the party, the party left me when they took a hard right."Like (1)

80%of People vote the way their Parents voted, this is a fact. Many people never begin to think for themselves, as in Religion, way of life, ect. people like to think they make their own decisions ,but in truth they, either do what they are familiar with,or follow the pack.

Habit. It's how their parents always voted, probably grandparents too, it's easier to go on doing things one way than to do any thinking for yourself.

Culture, conditioning, any number of reasons. I wish all people, regardless of party affiliations would fact check everything they hear or read and fully understand the entire Constitution. Personally, I would like a shock collar system implemented with everyone who runs for and holds public office.

It's easier than critical thinking, and it makes them feel like they belong.
