Because we all can imagine what it feels like to cheat or be cheated on. It's much the same way as seeing pictures of abused animals. You've never seen that particular animal before, don't know what the circumstances were or the people involved. But the "moral compass" inside of you knows the distinction between right and wrong, good and evil. You know it's wrong to cheat because you know how it feels or can imagine how it feels to be cheated on. And feelings of moral culpability dictate popular opinions.

They care about other people, even those they don't know and they know that if one of us is hurt it hurts all of us.

Compassion for someone else who is about to have their heart broken and be betrayed. Because some of us care about marriage and keeping promises. Because knowing that that sort of thing happens makes us all feel a bit more cynical about whether someone will be true to us. Because I'd like to believe that there are loyal and wonderful men in the world and men that I can trust and look up to. And the more men that I know are cheaters, the more a part of me will distrust and believe that all men cheat.
