I have a daughter with Downs, they also have distinctly different looking toes/feet. These features are obviously related to the extra half 21st chromosome that didn't separate properly at conception in some way.

The only thing that upset me was when she was young and some parents wouldn't let their kids play with her. They would act like it was communicable like the flu. Idiots with no clue should educate themselves before their ignorance hurts others no doubt.

Its to do with a chromosome problem, smooth tongue and line free palms is another side effect too. No disrespect meant obviously.

There are many birth problems which results in the babies displaying similar features. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is another. Projeria, is another. Recognizing the facts, doesn't indicate any disrespect, or insensitivity.

In spite of the fact that you've already been accused of being insensitive, because we mustn't ever speak of such things...I'm going to share a story with you that I think is amusing.
I was a kid once, and there was a special ed section of the school, in a wing away from the general population. The only time we would see the "special" children was during lunch, and when we all disembarked from our buses. There was a girl named Nancy who was Down Syndrome, and naturally, I was a bit curious about her, as she looked different. I knew her name because the teacher was yelling it.
Anyway, the next year, I noticed a whole bunch of other Nancys, and I wondered why Nancy's parents kept having kids if they were all going to be in special classes. I had no idea at that point that they were not in fact Nancy's sisters, but I figured they HAD to be because they looked so similar. End of story.

Down's Syndrome manifests at a genetic level. They have an extra copy of a chromosome. It causes what is called decelerated maturation (neotony) which means that the structure of their entire body grows at a different rate than a normal person and in different proportions and this leads to health problems and most of them die young. We just weren't supposed to have that many chromosomes.

Because of the nature of the syndrome. The malformations aren't exactly uniform, but are very similar in all fetuses afflicted with downs. Therefore, the same symptoms show up in almost all of those affected by the syndrome.

I agree. Its the nature of the syndrome that interjects certain symptoms and characteristics into them. So they wind up with very similar facial features and No doubt they have other things in common too. Like behavioral patterns etc.
