Why do peoples skin wrinkle when they've been in water for a while?

Or to be more specific, why do the fingers and toes wrinkle? Have you ever wondered that? I hadn't till today.

Your skin cells absorb water, but since your skin is already stretched tight over your flesh, it bunches up on itself, causing the wrinkles.

But why only the fingers and toes? There are other parts of loose skin which don't wrinkle. Like the skin around ones ****

Because your skin has a waterproof protein called keratin. I guess the fingers and toes this protein wears off faster there. Eventual your body produces more and your skin becomes waterproof again.
