Why do so many of the world religions old and new share the same themes? Are they all skewed versions of the original?

They all attempt to address the human condition of birth, personality, death, and mindless acts of nature; and they are all invented by persons who share the same blindspots common to all humans..

My take is that all religions are mythology. And it turn all mythologies are rooted in some fact. I think that most have just been imbelished to the point that they turned into religions. Early humans with no basis for comparison simply described event and happenings to the best of thier ability. I think most stories of gods with thier fantasict weapons of destruction were probably advanced races visiting our planet. Thats why they are refered to as sky people or gods.

In general the older the religion the more myths and rituals making extreme customization possible for the individual. For example, Taoists believe the human body alone possesses some 8,000 gods and a priest's job is to tell you which ones are not getting along, what rituals to perform, etc. However, superficially you might not notice any significant difference from mainstream Christianity just by visiting a temple simply because most religions pander to the mainstream. People are people and tend to have pretty much the same concerns and desires wherever you go and religions tend to naturally emphasis those themes more than others.

My grandfather used to say that the world's religions were all basically 'different doors to the same room'. Of course, he wasn't terribly religious. ;)

Yep. They see what's popular and reinvent it in their own name.

They were all attempting to provide comfort and a meaning for life to creatures who needed those things because their brains had a lot of capacity but not much knowledge.

That's like saying Hamlet and the Iliad are really just two different versions of the same story because there are some similarities in the treatment of the subject matter.
