Why do some MEN do this?

when they meet a girl - say they are nice and cute - but then ask their friends questions about them?

the guy i like did it to me. he's a friend of a friend. he asked my friend how old i am, if i was a nice girl, what my ex was like [dno why it matters coz he dont wanna be in a relationship anyway].. The fact that he didn't ask me these things, kinda made me think..

he says he's weary of girls and is scared of getting hurt after his last ex. and because of this he's not ready for a relationships so it seems. he told my friend this. i saw the conversation on msn. so why's he asking questions about me? why cant he ask me himself?
