maybe because he doesn't feel that he is good enough for her, so trying to bring down her self esteem so he would have a better chance

It is a pick-up artist technique. You basically destroy the girl's self-esteem, and make her want to have your approval by putting her down repeatedly. Thus she will want to date and have sex with you.
