Why do some people feel that keeping the customs, rules and traditions are more important than the peoples wellbeing
In theory, customs rules and traditions are supposed to be for the benefit of the people. for example, genital mutilation in africa, it has no purpose and is downright harmful. But its a cultural tradition.

...There are two- no, many sides to this. The people who do cultural things like the example you gave, do it not only because it is tradition, but because that is what the believe in with all their heart. And then there are those who only go through with such things because they can not stand up for themselves.
