because pretty girls are always told their pretty so when they don't hear when they feel they need too they start to think that they are not pretty. (i feel this way sometimes). It's almost like pretty girls expect people to always compliment them and say " oh your pretty".not so pretty girls think their pretty because some may have nice body lots of time or good personalities so more guys hit on them which leads them to think that they are pretty. I think I'm pretty sometimes and not pretty other times.

because girls are taught from a young age that to be pretty is to be successful and the epitome of femaleness. most are not taught that to be strong and smart and ethical is what makes you worthwhile as a person...it's all about looks. so they equate how they feel inside to their perception of how they look on the outside as self-worth.

I think that a lot of it is the constant competition people are falsely in. When people accept themselves they are generally happier and have higher self-esteem. But when people are in a close competition they keep striving to be 'better' in relation to others around them. The outliers are content while the clustered datum is not. ;)
