because until you are married and/or live together you have not been honest with the person your dating.
Women: yes they fart and use the toilet and they dont always look perfectly made up when the get out of bed
Men: rather watch **** and sports the romantic comedies and the crusty sock next to the bed was not something they stepped in.Like (2)

In the old days, It referred to people who have had sexual relations before marriage. The couple would have to hide it or face the scorn of family and friends. Therefore, marriage made an "honest woman" because she did not have to hide anymore.
Why it was the woman who had to made honest and not the man is purely sexist.
