You’ve heard that left handed people use the right sides of their brain. Well, we Americans drive on the right because we’re not in our right minds!

I assked a Brit that question and he said,"You drive on the right side but, we drive on the correct side". Seriously, I don't know but, countries such as France and Germany and I think Sweden, used to drive on the left but changed to the right side in the early 1950's. I know that Japan has always driven on the left side.

Its not only England, but Japan and Australia too I think. And the reason dates back to horse drawn carriages, where the driver usually sits in the middle. At some point when street rules had to be established, England for some odd reason choose left.

I heard read a story about that, altough I can't tell for sure if it's true. But it dates back to the days of Napoleon. Before that, traffic was never any busy so it didn't matter much if you passed someone left or right, it was just how the situation came to be. But Napoleon had this heavy sword he always carried with him wich made his horse always go to the right. Now instead of hanging the sword over his other shoulder he made a rule that everywhere within countries under his command (and he commanded just about all over Europe by then) people shoud all drive on the right side of the road. But England was never under the command of Napoleon so they didn't obey that rule.
Napoleon also never went to America, but his followers did. There's lots of French influence as well as Spanish and Dutch, all countries that drove on the right side. And so it developed that America drove on the right side too.Like (1)

Cause that's the side the steering wheel is on. I afraid to drive in England. I'm scared I would go to shift gears and fall out the door.

It has to do with a disfunction in the brains of people in europe...I heard that they are suffering from some sort of neurological break down in the frontol lopes and thinga ding ding cortexes...soon...they will walk on hand and feet again. Just be glad you are american. We don't got those problems...

I think the Brits driving on the left is a throwback to the old tradition of keeping the right hand free to draw their sword or something; has it's roots in history long before the auto ever came along.

i read it was due to hatred of britain and a desire to poke little disrespectful jabs at them. kind of like changing the lyrics of "God save the queen" to "my country 'tis of thee" but maybe not quite to that level.
