Because even when we were under new labour, we were wedded to capitalism rather than true socialism. All the countries assets have been sold off so the only way other than to tax the wealthy and deal with the expenses scandal is to continue with indirect taxation which affects the lower classes and small businesses. For ordinary people, it is easier to "fail" in this climate because it is near on impossible to become succesful unless you are already a multi national company or money grabbing banker or MP. The government makes it easy by failing to provide the support needed to get out of this cycle and making it easier to claim benefits instead of working. Rewarding failure is actually protecting themselves, most have additional jobs as ceo for utility companies or whatever so they are happy to keep themselves rich and the poor poor in this way.

We do it in USA also - CEOs who trash their companies sending stockholder values plummeting and ruining profitability - are rewarded EVEN WHEN FIRED with Golden Parachutes worth more than the average guy makes in a lifetime. Recently one was fired twice in 2 years...nice theft if you can get away with it!

We have a guy who ran a major bank into virtual bankruptcy but is rewarded with nearly £400,000 annual pension. If I turned out bad work, all I get is fired. How does that work then?

Best Answer

You see my frustration. It's because we LET them. More protest, less complacency. Governments toppled last year because the populace refused the status quo. We need to change the rules allowing such blatant theft. Even stockholders in these companies can't stop it because we get no direct say. The Board of Directors is stacked [our only vote] and ultimately is chosen by institutional investors who have most of the votes.
