I think it was meant to represent purity and the fact that brides were to be virgins. Ironically, the same standard wasn't applied to the grooms, who often wore black. Hmmm. Wonder why??Like (1)

I actually heard it started because of Queen Viktoria wearing white on her wedding day and not because its a sign of purity.
