Women can only become pregnant a few days out of the month. Right before that, your uterine lining thickens to support a growing embryo, and your ovaries release an egg. If you aren't impregnated, your body sheds your uterine lining and the egg, which is the nastiness that happens once a month. Older women don't get periods because they have run out of eggs.

The body builds up a "lining" inside the uterus and releases an egg each month to ready the woman for a child, if the egg is fertilised. If it is not, all of it, egg and "lining" is discarded (menstruation). As one ages, the quality of the eggs deteriorate and the body stops releasing them. No egg, no need for that "lining"---menstruation ceases.
