Why do you like the music or songs that you do? Is it cause of the lyrics? meaning? just like how it sounds?

It's a combination....sometimes it's the actual sound of something - the production sounds amazing. Sometimes it's the 'hook' of the song....a catchy vocal line or a guitar riff. Sometimes it's the attitude...what's trying to be convayed to the listener. And the sometimes it's the story....

I'll listen to Kate Bush, Enya & John Mayer because of the sound and the attitude. I'll listen to AC/DC because of the 'Hook' and the attitude. I'll listen to John Mellencamp,Springsteen, Dan Reed Network and Fish-Era Marillion because of the passion, the attitude and the lyrics. I'll listen to Madonna because of the hook and the production...

In the main I'll like 'real' songs played by 'real' people...

All three make a big impact on me. If I love the sound and the music yet hate the lyrics I can't like the song as a whole. Although I take music a bit more seriously than most. :)

for me, music (like all art) has to induce emotion of some sort - if it doesn't, its worthless

It's all about the music for me. Lyrics are just the icing on the cake. Often I mishear the lyrics anyway.

Most of the time it's the overall sound, lyrics don't even have to be in a language I understand. I can listen to the song over and over and not even really hear the lyrics.

Then there are those songs that have lyrics that touch me deeply.

And then there are special songs, ones that instantly transport me to another place and time when I hear them.

On occassion I like a song simply for the beat but typically music has to have a meaning for me. I connect to the experiences being sung about and it moves me. Even if it isnt an experience I have gone through, if the song is sung with emotion you can hear it and it makes you feel it.

I choose to like a song because of the way it makes me feel, and the thoughts it makes me think.

I like songs that are unique, emotional, creative, thought-provoking, require skill to play, sound awesome (I usually like heavier stuff) and discuss a topic of importance. Not just love, relationships, breakups and anger. Songs that have true value and meaning. Songs played by people who actually have talent and are intelligent.

And that why I like porcupine Tree!

For me it is all about the lyrics. I love a song that has a meaning that touches my soul and speaks to me. Songs have a way of saying what we cant say in person sometimes and we all know that when a song that speaks to us is on it is a very emotional thing.......

A song is worthless until it has a few things:

A purpose,
A feeling it is trying to evoke,
Words that do the purpose justice,
and passionate musicians.

This is such a funny question. My top three favorite types of music are thus:
Underground Horrorcore Rap,
Country and
WWI/50's music.

At first glance, they have nothing in common, but they do!

They all say the same things. And they're things I understand.

The beats and melodies always make things interesting. They also make them nice to listen to. But more than anything, it's a combination. It's the beats I find attractive with lyrics I understand and relate to. Weather it makes me laugh, cry or punch a wall it's getting an emotional rise out of me.

That's what music is for. To tap into our heart of hearts and tug on the emotions we can sometimes deny.
