Why do you think Jesus said to "turn the other cheek"?

I heard a very plausible, perhaps unsuspected, answer based on the historical context of the day...not the "for now and for all time" lesson one...

All good answers, right from the writer's point of view, and I may NOT be right, but I've still to hear the...theory...I heard. I'll make a small story containing my answer the interested can find, but for now the answer that I chose comes closest to the spirit of what I heard. I SAID I mayn't be right but do have a look. Narrowmindedness can't be good!

Turning the other cheek is a fluffy nonsense lesson. When you are picking your teeth up off the pavement, you'll see the lack of wisdom in it.

It is a way of saying do not respond in kind when someone is mean or cruel, don't meet violence with violence, nastiness with nastiness, rise above. He said it because according to what is written about him he was a man of peace and that is the peaceful response to someone who acts negatively towards you.

Well in olden times it was customary to fart in the general direction of people you didnt like . Jesus was saying that you should turn your cheeks in the other direction and blow off the other way thus forgiving or ignoring the person in "the line of fire" .

It was probably intended to mean that violence begets violence which is what we are all given to understand but its political undertones probably means that when you get yourself into a hole then find another to come out of. A secular lesson in diplomacy and nothing whatsoever to do with religion.

It's ment to encourage pasivism, if a man sue you in the law and take away your coat, give him your cloak also, if a man strike you on one cheak turn also to him the other. Be peacfull and passive.

It takes more self-control to walk away from a fight than it does to actually fight. It shows you are the bigger person.

Jesus had a strange sense of humor.

I believe it was a come back against the common practice of taking revenge on those who hurt you. "an eye for an eye"

what's the historical context answer?

Because the words were authentically recorded in the Bible. He Himself has sacrified more than turning the other cheek.

Because it makes you closer to god to overlook and forgive. You forgive someone, the same way god forgives your for your sins. Also it's said in the bible, that god will be the one to seek vengeance on those that deserve it. So basically if you do it yourself, you're playing the role of god so to speak.
