Several reasons; mostly because people are still being raised by bigots with an "us vs. them" attitude. People also buy into popular stereotypes, it's easier than bothering to get to know someone as an individual. And then there's that old fallback---fear and distrust of that which is "different".

Racism exists so people experience it and it affects the way they think. Hate causes fear and hate unless people make a decision to react with love and understanding. That is a challenge which people struggle with - hence more racism. For the cycles to end people have to have the will and it is hard.

Because of the way our media handles racial issues. Certain ethnic groups are still portrayed negatively and still do not have equality. It's harder for people to get certain job if they're part of a certain ethnic group etc. This leads to a lot of hate towards that group for various reasons
