It's a crude attempt at psychoanalysis. Trying to get to know you ethically and spiritually ....beyond "just your technical knowledge". Which of course ends up being basically worthless because "everyone lies on those questions" ....trying to guess "what the employer wants to hear".

They do hold the best cards, don't they. I suppose you should make sure the entire company is not populated by people like that.

If I saw stuff like that in a job app. id be leaning towards thinking theyre trying to crawl under the bonnet and evaluate me psychologically on some level

Sometimes they want to get a quick, but important, glimpse into your personality and how well you handle pressure and unforeseen challenges.
