Growing up we called this setting on the toaster the "board bread" setting. LOL!!

The opposite extreme was the "warm bread" setting. (because it really wasn't even toast).

I suppose the designers of toasters felt that near the end of the toaster's life it might get a bit tired and have to be turned up - so they made them able to be turned up a bit more than normal... Would work better in a brown-out as well... :-)

because the toasters are made in china and they have different voltage current levels than we do in the US and UK - what crisply toasts in china just burns in countries with a more advanced power grid

I don't know but, why do we not refer to un-toasted bread as "raw toast".
